I understand that sometimes there can be miscommunication between the therapist and the client in therapy. Normally it is discussed, handled and you move forward. As with all relationships, it should progress and become easier. However, that was not the case when it came to Ms. Hatfield. Ashley is mendacious and condescending. When it came to scheduling an appointment, it is consistent and easy. However, if you ever miss an appointment regardless of an emergency or not, she berates you. Treating someone with kindness should be relatively easy when your job is to help people. You never know what is going on in someones life and you should be mindful when your job is to help. Shes a speech therapist, not a family counselor or child psychologist, and yet she felt the need to implicitly criticize our parenting. That is highly inappropriate. We expected her to work with our child and us, not against us. It should not have gotten to the point that we dreaded every week that we had speech therapy. The only reason we continued services is that we thought our child liked her at least. But even that was thwarted after we saw that she had no issues with another speech therapist whatsoever. Our child allowed the new therapist, a complete stranger, to get near them, whereas they avoided allowing Ashley to be near them despite knowing her for so long. After that, we knew she was not the right fit for none of us. Therapy is supposed to be fun for the child. We should not have attempted to push through a negative experience. It takes more than knowing the techniques of therapy to be an effective therapist. And considering that one of us is actually in the process of becoming a therapist, I recommend that Ashley go back and read the Code of Ethics.
