I cannot begin to express my feelings on this pulmonologist I transferred to from another which I had seen for years and which was very nice but not proactive in my case.
My first appt with Dr Atkins was two weeks ago. It was an appt for a checkup and see if anything else can be done for me, now I am in Gold stage, or known as stage 4. Dr Atkins walked in after the nurse took my vitals and had a pulmonology therapist meet us there with him. She had a device with her called Life2000, a non-evasive ventilator. She hooked it up to me, explaining what it does, how it helps and I can say, I felt as if I had new lungs while using it even tho I normally use 3 liters O2 247, the Life2000 was ever better. It is now going through the process of insurance approval and most of us know, most companies refuse if they can but time will tell.
He listened to my lungs then noticed my left leg was larger than my right and asked if that was my norm and I told him no, it started 3 days prior to my appt. He then wheeled me to the ER himself, ordering tests which showed I have a DVT or known as a blood clot in my left leg. I am back home and on blood thinners, a DVT can take a good three months to dissolve. If I had not gone to this Dr, I would of never known I had a blood clot and it may of traveled to my heart or lungs.
Dr Atkins was more proactive than any other pulmonologist Ive had in my 22 years with Copd. I am happy that I made the change when I did. My other lung Dr was extremely nice too but was not treating me as I felt I needed to help improve my quality of life, as I had gone downhill the past 3-4 years seeing him which with Copd happens naturally in most cases but I felt he was doing nothing but being nice, being respectful, but I needed more. I wanted to live as long as I can, glad I made the change when I did. Dr Atkins has won Best Dr awards in 2020 and 2021 in a NH Magazine. He is the kind of Dr you need when you have a chronic illness and still need hope.
