This individual kicked my wife and I black military family out of our second marital counseling session for not providing him specific personal details as to why we rescheduled our last session. My wife called a few hours ahead of time to reschedule our appointment due to a last minute personal reason and he proceeded to berate her on the phone about his 24 hour cancellation policy. He made his point clear to wife the first time he brought it up over the phone. She made his point clear to me. Although, we felt he was very unprofessional for berating my wife regarding the 24 hr cancellation policy we still drove 45 minutes to see this guy so we can proceed w our marital counseling. As soon as we got in the door he started berating us again about why we rescheduled our last session and his 24 hr cancellation policy. I told him something personal came up but he continued to ask me again and again for specific details. I told him I did not have to disclose personal info that was not related to our counseling session. He then got upset and kicked us out. This was completely unprofessional. As a service member - seeking counseling - is hard to do - especially marital counseling. We sought help from this guy and he kicked us out.
It became obvious to me that this guy did not care about me or my wifes desire to focus on our marital counseling. My wife and I are black so I am trying not to see it as a racial thing but its hard not to - considering how unprofessional this guy was in his tone with us and how he kicked us out. I am sharing my experience so others will know the kind of guy we are all relying on for counseling services. I pray he does not kick anyone else out of his sessions for not providing detailed personal answers as to why something in life happened and they had to reschedule.
Recommendation: 1. Do not berate your clients and show more care for their well being over a cancellation policy. 2. Treat other minorities better than you did us. 3. Treat service members and their families - who need this service - better than you did us. 4. For the sake of the profession and the lives it matters to - do not kick people out who need this help. 5. Treat people with dignity and respect or quit. 6. Charge a fee for late cancellations and allow your clients to focus on the reason they come to see you.
