Dickey's Barbecue Pit is the world's largest barbecue franchise with over 600 sites in 44 states. The restaurant chain is quickly expanding, and it still uses the original recipe, which means that the meat is smoked on-site at individual locations.

In 1941, WWI veteran Travis Dickey opened a barbeque pit in Dallas, Texas. Dickey's went on to achieve widespread success and began franchising in 1994, despite the fact that the initial location had to rent off space on its signboard to help cover the costs of running the restaurant.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit is a family business that has been handed down through the generations. Laura Rey Dickey was chosen CEO in 2017, following in the footsteps of a long line of Dickeys.

Dickey's is dedicated to using only the best ingredients. Their meat is free from artificial colors, flavors, and nitrates, and their pork is hormone-free, as is their cage-free poultry.

If you live with diabetes, the good news is that you can easily find something suitable to eat at Dickey's. That's because many of the items on the menu are naturally low-carb, as you would expect from a grill restaurant.

Here's what you can order at Dickey's Barbecue Pit if you need to keep an eye on your carbs and sugar levels because you're managing your diabetes.

Low-Carb Meat Options at Dickey's Barbecue

It's quite easy to watch your carbs when you eat at Dickey's Barbecue Pit. All you have to do is choose your meats, sides and sauces and skip all the bread to keep your carb levels in check.

The pork and beef at Dickey's Barbecue Pit have the lowest carbohydrate content. The turkey and chicken are higher in carbs but lower in calories. On a platter, you have the option of one, two, or three meats.

  • Pork ribs (0 carbs per serving)
  • Pulled pork (0 carbs per serving)
  • Beef brisket (0 carbs per serving)
  • Chicken breast (4 g carbs per serving)
  • Turkey (8 g carbs per serving)
  • Kielbasa sausage (8 g carbs per serving)

If you're considering a taco, keep in mind that a brisket or chicken and cheese taco will set you back roughly 14 net carbs, but because it's the same meat you'd get on a plate, you might as well skip the carb-laden corn shell.

The restaurant's claim to fame is pulled pork shoulder sandwiches. There's also smoked beef brisket, turkey, chicken, and kielbasa sausage. People who eat a low-carb diet are often enthusiastic about jalapeno cheddar sausage. It has a very low carb count. Any of the meats can be ordered with or without bread. It's always best to skip all bread if you're on a keto diet.

Sides and sauces

Dickey's offers two side options, the best of which is the salad. If you don't want to eat lettuce, the following are also good choices.

  • Caesar Salad (9 g of carbs) — This number includes the croutons, so omit those and your carb count will go down as a result.
  • Green beans (11 net carbs)
  • Creamed spinach (11.5 net carbs)

The famous BBQ sauce at Dickey's Barbecue has 12 net grams of carbs per serving, which unfortunately makes it quite unsuitable for someone with diabetes. The good news is that you can enjoy the jalapeno slices and pickles instead, as they come with almost no carbs at all.

What to avoid at Dickey's Barbecue Pit if you have diabetes

Even though this is a grill joint, Dickey's Barbecue Pit also has lots of things on the menu that are not suitable for people with diabetes. That's because they have a high amount of carbs and sugar.

Here is a list of the items that you should stay away from at Dickey's Barbecue Pit if you want to keep your blood sugar levels in check.

  • Macaroni and cheese
  • Potato salad
  • Baked potato casserole
  • Waffle fries
  • Jalapeno beans
  • Yeast rolls
  • Texas toast
  • Cornbread
  • Grilled cheese
  • Double dip sandwiches
  • Sliders
  • Brisket mac stack
  • Bangers and mash stack
  • Brisket mac taco

You should also steer clear from all the desserts at Dickey's Barbecue Pit because they are loaded with sugar. These include the Double Berry Cobbler Bar, Chocolate Chunk Cookie, Blondie Brownie and Pecan Pie.

Bottom line

Since there are lots of meat options on the menu at Dickey's Barbecue Pit, it's quite easy to find something suitable to eat if you're managing your diabetes. Simply stay away from burger buns, taco shells and bread as much as possible. As with any other restaurant, it's always a good idea to look carefully at the nutritional information on the menu before ordering. That way, you can be sure you don't go over the recommended carb intake for the day.
