When you have diabetes, going out to eat with your friends and family can be really challenging. However, the good news is that it’s not impossible to have a diabetes-friendly meal at fast food joints, and Chick-fil-A is a restaurant that offers multiple options for people who are watching their carb intake.

Whether you’ve been living with diabetes for a while or have just been diagnosed, you know that the important thing to remember is to keep the number of carbs you consume every day as low and consistent as possible so you can prevent a spike in your blood sugar levels.

The menu at Chick-fil-A is unfortunately full of items that are loaded with carbs and fats. However, there are also several veggie and healthier options to choose from that will allow you to keep the number of carbs you consume under 60 g per meal.

What are the best choices at Chick-fil-A for someone with diabetes?

No matter what you choose to have at Chick-fil-A, it’s essential to look at the nutritional information provided on the menu so you can make sure that you don’t go over your recommended carb intake for the day.

Here are some of the diabetes-friendly meals you can enjoy at Chick-fil-A:

Chick-fil-A Sandwich with a Side Salad

There are multiple types of sandwiches to choose from at Chick-fil-A, and most of them have around 40 g of carbs. If you pair them with a side salad, you can get a delicious and nutritious meal for under 50 g of carbs. However, keep in mind that if you choose to add a dressing to your salad, the number of carbs in it may vary.

8-Piece Chicken Nuggets with a Side Salad

Chicken nuggets are one of the most iconic meals at Chick-fil-A, and you will be surprised to learn that even though they are breaded, they are quite low in carbs. Eight nuggets have a total of 9 g of carbs, which means that you can even pair them with a small size of French fries that clocks in at 33 g of carbs and add a salad for 6 g of carbs as well. This meal will have a total of 48 g of carbs, which is not bad for fast food. If you choose to have just the nuggets and a side salad, you’ll be looking at only 15 g of carbs.

Chicken Strips with a Side Salad

Chicken strips are another classic at Chick-fil-A, and even though they are a bit higher in carbs than the nuggets, you can still enjoy a serving of three strips for 22 grams of carbs. Have them with a side salad, and your meal will only have under 30 g of carbs. You can also opt for the notorious Superfood Side Salad with your chicken strips. Featuring a broccolini and kale blend with a maple vinaigrette dressing, roasted nuts, and dried sour cherries, this salad is delicious and nutritious, and it only has 25 g of carbs.

Cobb Salad

This is one of the best and most satisfying meals you can have at Chick-fil-A if you have diabetes. If you choose to have the salad with grilled nuggets, you will get a hearty meal that consists of a bed of mixed greens, shredded Monterey Jack and cheddar cheeses, sliced hard-boiled egg, crumbled bacon, and grape tomatoes, all for 24 g of carbs.

Fruit Cup

If you want to have breakfast or a snack at Chick-fil-A, the Fruit Cup is one of the best options on the menu because it only has 15 g of carbs for a medium serving. As its name suggests, this is a nutritious fruit mix that includes strawberry slices, mandarin orange segments, blueberries, and pieces of red and green apples.

What to avoid at Chick-fil-A if you have diabetes?

Most of the breakfast options at Chick-fil-A are best to be avoided if you have diabetes. The popular Chick-fil-A Chicken Biscuit has 45 g of carbs, while a Sausage, Egg & Cheese Muffin has 30 g of carbs. If you want to enjoy any of these options, you won’t have room for much else.

The Hash Brown Scramble Burrito is another morning meal that you should steer away from as it packs a whopping 51 g of carbs. The Waffle Potato Fries, popular as they are, have 45 g of carbs for a medium serving, so you should always opt for a salad as a side.

It’s not impossible to have a diabetes-friendly meal at Chick-fil-A — all you have to do is opt for the healthier items on the menu. Choose a salad instead of fries as a side and opt for grilled instead of fried chicken, and you'll be able to enjoy a meal out with your friends and family without causing a blood sugar spike.
