When you live with diabetes, pizza should definitely not be at the top of your preferable food list. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy a slice from time to time. Pizza Hut is one of the most popular places to get pizza in the country, and even though it’s not the most diabetic-friendly place out there, it’s still possible to have some of the items on their menu without experiencing a spike in your blood sugar levels.

Here’s what you need to look out for if you have diabetes and you want to enjoy a meal out with your friends at Pizza Hut.

  • Check the nutrition information before ordering — Pizza Hut does a great job at making this information available both on their website and in the restaurant.

  • If you can, plan your order ahead so you have time to figure out the total amount of carbs of your meal.

  • Always keep the toppings light and look for vegetables instead of processed fatty meats such as sausage and pepperoni.

What can you eat at Pizza Hut if you have diabetes?

As mentioned above, Pizza Hut shouldn’t be your first choice when eating out as a person with diabetes. However, some items on the menu are less loaded with carbs and fats than others are. Here’s what you can consider having at Pizza Hut to avoid a spike in your blood sugar levels.

Naked Wings

Yes, people don’t mostly go to Pizza Hut for wings, but these are one of the best items on the menu for people with diabetes. It’s essential to go for wings that aren’t drowning in sugar filled sauces such as Teriyaki or BBQ. Instead, go for the regular wings and pair them with a salad. One wing at Pizza Hut has 80 calories, 6 grams of carbohydrates, 0 grams of sugar and 4 grams of fat.

Caesar Salad

If you opt for a classic Caesar salad without any dressings, this could be quite a healthy choice at Pizza Hut. Skip the dressing altogether or ask to have it on the side so you can control how much you add to the salad. A Caesar salad at Pizza Hut has 180 calories, 24 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of sugar and 7 grams of fat.

Hawaiian Chicken Thin ’N Crispy Pizza

This is one of the healthiest pizzas on the Pizza Hut menu. It has 6 grams of protein per slice thanks to the addition of chicken, but it only has 14 grams of carbohydrates and 3 grams of sugar. The thin crust does a great job at minimizing the number of calories per slice, too, and you’ll be looking at just 110 calories for each slice.

Veggie Lover’s Thin ’N Crispy Pizza

This is another pizza that’s relatively healthy on the Pizza Hut menu. Just like the Hawaiian pizza above, the thin crust makes it easy to shave off lots of the extra calories and carbohydrates. As its name suggests, the Veggie Lover’s pizza has lots of veggies per slice and it comes at just 100 calories, 16 grams of carbohydrates and 2 grams of sugar per slice.

What should you avoid at Pizza Hut to avoid a spike in blood sugar levels?

Most of the items on the Pizza Hut menu are not safe to eat for people who live with diabetes. You should avoid all types of pizzas that are not made with thin crust. The famous stuffed crust from Pizza Hut is definitely not a good idea if you have diabetes because it’s overloaded with carbs and fat. Some of the pizzas on the menu, such as the Pizza Hut Supreme Original Pan Pizza, have up to 400 calories and 37 grams of carbs per slice, so you should stay away from them.

The pasta at Pizza Hut is also not a great choice if you have diabetes. For example, the Pizza Hut Tuscani Pasta Chicken Alfredo has 630 calories and 56 grams of carbohydrates per serving, while the Pizza Hut Tuscani Pasta, Meaty Marinara has 510 calories and 48 grams of carbs per serving.

When it comes to desserts, there’s nothing on the menu that’s safe to eat for people with diabetes. A chocolate chip cookie dough has 336 calories and 46.1 grams of carbs per serving and that’s before adding vanilla ice cream.

It’s possible to enjoy some of the items on the Pizza Hut menu if you have diabetes, but it’s essential to have a close look at the nutritional information provided by the restaurant before ordering. Stick to a couple of slices of veggie pizza on thin crust, some wings or salad when you’re out at Pizza Hut with friends and family.
